About the Authors

David G. Hornak, Ed.D., has lived and worked in Holt, Michigan for the past thirty years. As an employee of Holt Public Schools, he has taught young fives, kindergarten, first grade, and Reading Recovery. Hornak is currently superintendent of schools and was named Executive Director of the National Association for Year-Round Education in 2015. He is addicted to serving others, especially his own community as well as those interested in learning more about the balanced school calendar.

Dr. Jon Ram Mishra currently serves as an assistant superintendent for the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington State. In that role, he provides leadership over elementary, early learning, and federal programs. He has been at the agency since June 2019. Prior to landing at the state agency, Jon has served as a school administrator at all levels in Oregon and Washington state as well as serving at the district level, including a stint as a superintendent of schools.

Dr. James Pedersen is currently the superintendent for the Essex County Schools of Technology. His career in education spans over thirty years and includes a variety of instructional and administrative positions. Pedersen has published and been cited in over twenty articles as well as two books focusing on education, Rise of the Millennial Parents (2013) and Summer versus School: The Possibilities of the Year-Round School (2015). His research and contributions of school calendars is an ongoing passion.
