Small colleges are at risk of shutting their doors forever. These institutions face overwhelming costs, low enrollment, and increasing competition from online universities. Once a pillar of upward mobility and community, these institutions are losing their influence. This book suggests pivoting the mission and operations of these small colleges, which make up more than half of higher education, to weave deeper into communities in which they reside and make a significant and direct impact. Let's do away with our single-minded focus on abstract research, change the role of the professor, and move to help our communities in a systematic way. This book focuses on how these institutions can take direct action to make a bigger impact on their areas of influence, draw more students, and breathe lifeblood into a withering middle America.
Matthew Wright is an Associate Professor and the chair of the physics department at Adelphi University, USA. He has a PhD in Physics from the University of Connecticut, USA, and has held research positions at Harvard University, USA, and Universität Innsbruck, Austria. His academic career is informed by his prior work as a Management Consultant at Princeton Consultants. His area of expertise is in atomic, molecular, and optical physics, where he uses lasers to cool down atoms to ultracold temperatures in order to explore quantum mechanics. Matthew Wright has created a unique, student-first college experience for undergraduates that involves connecting with and engaging undergraduates in all aspects of physics. This unique approach to education has resulted in a number of compelling op-eds and peer-reviewed publications on ways to improve higher education, in Higher Ed, Physics Today, and more. He has created an industry board, connecting is department to local and regional businesses, and won campus-wide teaching excellence awards.
