Jones presents students, academics, researchers, and general interest readers with an investigation of the theatrical jazz aesthetic, drawing on various jazz principles to illuminate aspects of the work of Laurie Carlos, Daniel Alexander Jones, and Sharon Bridgforth. The author has organized the chapters that up the main body of her text in three parts devoted to the making of artists and how artists make art, critically examining the overlapping artistic genealogies of a variety of theatrical jazz artists, and tracing the interconnections between African spirit practices and the making of theatrical jazz.
