Author Rowena Farre (1921-1979) was a London art student who escaped the confines of academia to lead a nomadic life as part of the community of Gypsies, travelers, tramps, and tinkers who lived on society's outskirts. Farre had two books published during her lifetime one a bestselling novel, and one chronicling her spiritual pilgrimage to India, the place of her birth and the origin of the Gypsies. In this book, she describes her travels with the Gypsies as she labored alongside them and formed enduring relationships. The kernel of the book is her love affair with a Gypsy man. An introduction by literary biographer Jay Griffiths gives background on Farre's life. The book includes chapter-opening b&w decorative illustrations.
