This resource for special educators and speech-language pathologists presents an eight-unit curriculum using PEERspective, a model framework for teaching social skills to secondary students with high-functioning autism. The curriculum progresses from trust and teambuilding through relationships, school events, stress management, communication, and life transitions. The book begins with an overview of the approach and ideas for communicating with administrators and parents, then provides lesson plans and step-by-step instructions for classroom groups and for activities such as going to the mall and school dances. It contains assessment materials, sample letters to parents, worksheets to use in discussion groups, and other handouts, which are also available for download from a web site. B&w photos are included. Annotation ©2018 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
Jennifer M. Schmidt is a special education teacher with 20 years of teaching experience in both general and special education settings. Jennifer and her now retired speech-language pathologist colleague piloted the PEERspective learning approach in the fall of 2007, and the class continues to this day. Other school districts have adopted the same model with similar success. Jennifer is a passionate educator who enjoys presenting at local, state, and national conferences about PEERspective, autism, and other topics related to special education.
