For health care planners, decision makers, and providers, this volume describes clinical and public health interventions and how to set targets to reduce risk factors for both smoking and obesity. It is a synthesis of multiple reports that emerged from a risk factor project started in 2004 by the British Columbia Healthy Living Alliance, which aimed to create a plan to confront risk factors and reduce chronic disease rates in the province in a long-term way. The data gathered can be applied to other areas of the world. It addresses the economic costs and benefits of reducing risk factors; measuring the burden of disease and progress in health care; how to have clear and effective interventions to reduce tobacco use, with recommended practices; and evidence related to obesity control and the effectiveness of specific interventions, linking obesity, unhealthy eating, and physical inactivity. The case study of British Columbia is interspersed throughout the text to illustrate the application of the information to other parts of the world. Krueger and Williams are associated with a health care consulting company in Canada. Kaminsky and McLean teach medicine at the U. of British Columbia and work with organizations fighting cancer.
