Bryan, Sanders, and Kaplan present a framework for the helping professions rooted in the concept of common morality developed by the late bioethicist and philosopher Bernard Gert. Acknowledging that there is no unique answer for every unique situation, they believe that a framework rooted in the common moral system makes for much more meaningful discussion about the facts of a case, while also promoting greater consensus with regard to distinguishing an ethical issue from a non-ethical one. Among their topics are moral development and ethical decision making in social work practice, confidentiality and the duty to warn and protect, paternalism, and dual relationships.
